Hi All. I'm living in France and want to buy a 7 seat Galaxy to transport ski clients to and from the airport and the ski lifts etc. Over here prices are quite high and at my budget I can mostly find 90hp TDi's. But sometimes I can find a 110 hp, but usually with a higher mileage.

The question is whether the 110 engine is so much better that I should pay the extra premium, or accept a higher mileage vehicle in order to get it. What do you think?? 90 hp or 110???

110bhp or 115 / 130 if you can afford it.

I have driven a 90 and it was hard work if I recall.

We have the 90 and find it ok

yes the 110 is better

but car full of kids the 90 finds it no problem or full of adults for that matter

think its the price factor that will probably make your mind up

Depends on the type of journeys - if you are going to use it for transporting clients - 7 people on board most of the time? - maybe the 90 will be a little slow, but if it is in stop-start traffic most of the time, this will not be too much of a problem. Also for trips to airports, once on a motorway cruising, there should be very little between the 90 and 110.

Personally I would get the 110 or, as has been said, try for a 115.

Thanks for the opinions so far. I've been to see a couple of 1996 90bhp Ghia's today. OK, but nothiing too inspiring though. One had blown it's turbo at 80,000 kms and had a whole new engine. Is that a common problem!!!

They all looked a bit short on spec' to me and I was thinking that perhaps the 110 or 115 was the point at which more kit started to get added. Do you have any comments on that? Is there an area in this forus where I can find model specs by year?

Your spec is the model range not the engine

the engines will be the same for the base to top of range

Go for the best spec going blown turbo very rare as is engine

Been looked after bad or just one of those things

Happy shopping

I noticed these had aircon rather than climate control, no parking sensors, manual windows in the back, no heated windscreen... stuff like that. I thought Ghia's came with this kind of kit? But maybe only from a certain age perhaps??

Hey, this forum is great BTW!! I can't believe how active it is and what great responses I am getting. Once we've bought I'll be staying with y'all.

In the UK, the 90 engine was never offered with the higher trim levels. The amount of equipment you get also varies in different countries.

Cruise

Winter pack

4 Electric windows

2 Electric rear flaps

Electric sunroof

Rear spoiler

Driving lights

Body kit

Heated seats

and just about everything that could go on it was on it except Alarm

But then thats my area

AH thats better

Maybe the 90 PS engine wasn't offered in higher trim levels once the 110 PS engine was launched (else my used car guide is wrong again!).

Hi Greg

Just to throw my'sixpence' in....

I have lived here in the French Alps for 3 years now and own a 1996 RHD 90 Tdi. It is a GLX model. I can honestly say that it is no problem going up and down to the slopes even fully loaded. Every winter I am up and down to different resorts all over the Alps fully loaded with kids and adults and skis and luggage and it behaves perfectly. I have a friend with a 130 and we regulary travel in each others cars and can say hand on heart we cant notice the difeerence. You'll find on the motorway that the 130 will feel a little quicker getting to speed but they are both great pulling cars and when at cruise they are both indestiguishable. I travel a lot between the airports of Geneva and Lyon to the resorts so I can speak with a bit of experience. I think your only concern should be about what toys you want and are willing to pay for and making sure you invest in decent snow chains!

My GLX came with a heated front screen so I am a little suprised you cant find one with that which is a must have up here in the mountains. I dont have all the toys unlike my friend but I am looking to upgrade this year. Only trouble with having a RHD in France is trying to get rid of it which I am about to go through. Looking forward to getting the newer model but seriously tempted by the Citroen C8 which felt great to drive too.

Thanks Mark. Always nice to have an opinion from someone that is using the vehicle for the exact same thing I intend to, and in the same environment too. I'm going to look at the 1999 110 versions when one next comes up. I think they'll have the heated screen and other kit I want.

But as you'll know, France is a big and sparsly populated country, so waiting for something suitable to come up that isn't millions of miles away is a bit of a nightmare. I'm in St Gervais, near Chamonix, so am looking at Lyon and Grenoble as my biggest cities close by.

Have you found any good websites etc for vehicle sales. The best I've found so far is www.bonjour.fr.

Best regards

As far as I`m concered there`s a vast difference between the 90 and 110 bhp engines so much so that when I bought my Galaxy at auction if it wasn`t a 110 bhp model I probably wouldn`t have kept it. Then again the 90 bhp model I drove maybe had a Maf sensor fault or something.......Has anybody fitted a VW approved 150bhp chip ?

its a shame your not here in the UK :o take a look at the fifth Sharan down! would be ok for those slippery mountain roads!

4X4 TDI SHARAN!

the TDI 4X4 was a short lived release job! its as the adverts says its RARE!

That's where my Gal came from; I was tempted to go along just to look at the 4x4 but so far have decided against it. :o

Yeah, but I don't have the money at the moment (no holiday for us this year, just the odd day out locally), and I'm still paying off the loan on my present Gal. Looking on the bright side, I've just realised that I'm half way through the 3 years though!

This may not be the place to ask but here goes..... how do you tell if diesel is 115ps or 130ps? Nothing on engines to indicate difference, or anywhere else I can see.

I remember reading answer to this on this site some time back but can't find it now using 'search'

Thanks in advance!
